Usually the result of stripped torque converter splines. Easily confirmed by checking fluid level with engine off - then with engine on. Transmission removal required for repair. Good luck!
Check transmission fluid level with engine OFF - make note of fluid level on dipstick Start engine and check fluid level again - note fluid level on dipstick IF fluid level did not decrease - remains the same - the torque converter is not turning transmission pump shaft - because the splines are stripped out. This is a common failure that can happen at any time and without any prior symptoms - no noise associated.
