What is your question?
The inside door lights in my 96 for Taurus won’t go off. The dome light stays off and the doors still lock. Could it still be the ajar switch? I was going to try and spray the door latches with wd-40 or electrical cleaner and see if that worked but I wanted to know if I needed to go straight to the ajar switch based on everything else working fine.
What makes this problem better or worse?
It comes and goes
How long has your 1996 Ford Taurus had this problem?

Why not just go ahead and do the tried and true WD-40 fix? Go from there.
100% lubricate, open and close affected doors, the problem should resolve. If it doesn't, then move towards the switch replacement.
I'm sure you've gotten a new car by now, but I made an account to tell you the real reason for this: The dimmer wheel that controls the light intensity of your dash. When it is set to max, to the point where it clicks, the door lights stay illuminated indefinitely. hope this helps!
The door ajar switch is incorporated into the door latch assembly itself - so ‘liberally’ spraying WD-40 into door latch will eventually free up the sticking switch mechanism.. However this is not a 100% guaranteed fix of course. May need to repeat application / procedure. Good luck !
