1991 ford taurus sho, stays at high rpms. Any answers on why this is happening?

As I shifted from first to second at around 4000 rpms a loud noise occurred as I let the clutch out. I pushed the clutch in and it idled at 3000 rpms on it's own. I'm wondering why this is occurring as I would like to get the car back to regular working condition, thanks!
