my ranger dies randomly. steering wheel/brakes lock up.

My 1988 ranger randomly dies on me. some times it will partially die on me ( gas wont work but engine is still on ) other times it completly dies and the steering wheel/brakes lock up. usually it starts right back up but other times it takes a few trys. It has been getting worse and worse over time. any info or advice would be greatly apreciated.
