I have an 89 ford ranger and I replaced plugs and wires. Will that damage my distributor cap and rotor

Not at all - in fact it will be a little less likely to damage cap and rotor due to less resistance within the plugs and wires .. However it is highly recommended to replace cap and rotor along with plugs and wires.
