key gets stuck in the ignition will not come out what is the problem

2006 Ford Fusion 99,000 miles. Key stuck in ignition. Used my thumb, pushed and quickly released (snapped) button on shifter knob a couple of times. This released key. Put key back in ignition and removed several times. It worked!!
