What is your question?
My car was diagnosed by a mechanic but he won't repair it. The vehicle turned off on the highway while going 55 mph. It starts but sounds like the bottom of the engine is going to fall off. Also there's white smoke coming out of the exhaust pipe.
What makes this problem better or worse?
Nothing
How long has your 2009 Ford Flex had this problem?
A few months

White smoke indicates there’s more damage than just bottom end.. Engine replacement is highly recommended - a good salvage engine is a popular way to go. Many salvage dealers offer excellent warranties on their engines - depending of course the mileage on the engine. Can’t offer an estimate here - that’ll have to come from the repair facility planning to do the engine swap. Good luck!
Side note to Pushrod's advice -- most people won't fix an engine like that. Especially a Ford engine. The time, cost and facility required would far outweigh the cost of replacing with a used or remanufactured assembly. On Ford's, you have options.
Why couldn't I just have the rod bearing repaired? It hasn't been driven since the failure occurred.
Firstly - it will likely be difficult to find a repair facility that is willing to invest the time necessary to do this repair - anymore it’s just too cost prohibitive to do major engine work. Next - to complete this repair - the engine MUST be removed - disassembled - the crankshaft will have to be re-machined or replaced - plus connecting rod reconditioning along with replacing all the bearings - and all of that is required just for a “spun bearing” .. Not to mention the other internal engine damage that is sure to be present..... Why would anyone do all of that when it will be less expensive just to replace the engine ? Can’t just pull the oil pan and stick a new bearing in and put it back together - it simply isn’t that easy! .... Plus that wouldn’t last long enough for the engine to start.
