I would remove the cluster and clean ALL of the connection terminals in rear of cluster and vehicle connector .. Possible the cluster itself is the culprit .. The simple fact that smacking the dash just above the cluster actually changes this issue indicates the problem has to be thereabouts! .. A sharp blow can be a pretty good test at times!
