can I use a transmission from a 1998 F150 (F85PHA) in my 1999 F150?

Thanks for the information. I was told the 1998 transmission would work for my 1999 F150 when I bought the 1998. Both are 4.6 engines and today I learned the transmissions are different but both do use the 4R70w's. Now I have the 98 f150 and can't use the transmission. I was told by two junkyards that I have to get a transmission from another 1999.

ok,from what i know,is there are two different 4.6L engines.one of them is a windsor and one is a romeo.the difference is the 8th digit of the vin#,made in two different plants?the romeo engine 8th digit is a W,and uses the 4R70W tranny.the windsor engine 8th digit is a 6,which uses the 4R100 tranny.if you have a 98 and a 99 vin W and they both are 4 wheel drive then the tag numbers would be the same.(F85PHA) then they would interchange.it's very confusing!! i have a 2000 F150 4.6L 2WD vin#W supercab with 310,000 miles on it and it has the 4R70W tranny, and still a rolling.tranny rebuilt several years ago,$1250.00,BUT that price has went UP since then.why FOMOCO did this,i don't have a clue?don't know if it will help,but i would get some more opinions from tranny shops and or the dealer parts/service person may give up some info.good luck and post findings.
