The higher gear - and/or driving up a grade - increases the torque load on the engine as well as the ignition system resulting in misfire .. Downshifting lightens the torque load and misfire disappears. Full professional scan test IS highly recommended .. This will likely include test driving vehicle with the scan tool connected - capturing a movie to be observed later to confirm all cylinder contributions - among many other important data inputs. You can see why this kind of testing//diagnosis is the most effective and efficient route to a successful repair .. The only other alternative is guessing at it.
