Trying to take nut off the end of the strut. I clamped the end plate in a vise and turned the nut with a socket and the cylinder turns in the strut. I try to hold the cylinder with a pipe wrench but it won't grab. I was not sure I was doing it right so I stopped before I messed it up more. How do you get the nut off? The numbers on the strut are T407HFoMoCo USA, BB53 18K001, 111031A and a very big DB

Hello, There are strut wrenches and pass-through sockets made for this. One of those tools fits on the nut, and either a socket, box-wrench, allen key, torx, or etorx will go on/in the end of the shaft to hold it while you turn the nut. Also, an impact usually spins them off, but may cause damage if used for installation.
This can be a very dangerous situation! .. You might want to consider a complete quick strut replacement or have a repair shop with the proper wall mounted coil spring depressor switch it out for you... Be careful, it will not be a pleasant experience if that coil releases suddenly! .... Quick strut.. Only way to go, ready to plug and play with all new mounting hardware already installed and the cost isn't that much more .. In some cases, it could be a LOT less expensive!
Thanks for your help. I thought there was probably a special tool.
