What would cause the heat to work only half the time? When the a/c works.

What is your question?

The a/c works fine. I have to drop the glovebox and manually flip the lever for the heat to work. Last winter it worked fine doing that. Now the heat is a 2 in 10 chance of actually kicking on when the arm is flipped to allow heat. Don't know if its relevant but the SUV also makes a water swooshing noise quite often. I really appreciate any advice on this. I am not sure of my motor size.
