Very difficult to check a starter motor for proper operation - very difficult indeed!! Starter may fail at any time without prior warning - ‘intermittent’ problems are common. *Hands-on* testing by experienced mechanic while failure IS present is required. Good luck!
There are specific test a knowledgeable technician can perform to prove or dismiss starter failure - however the failure ‘must’ be present at the time of testing. May involve leaving vehicles at repair facility for an extended period of time. (Couple days or so)
