I always TEST to determine if the failure is within the tank sending unit - wiring - or the instrument cluster itself .. Some just go ahead and start replacing parts.
does your car have a DIGITAL odometer(where it shows the total miles on your car)?
Yes, but can't read odometer because it says close door. All doors are shut and still have close door message. Also says oil change needed, but that's been done too. Won't let me reset digital area. Rest of instrument panel works just not fuel gauge.
ok,so you have a message saying to close door, then the dome light should be on also unless you pulled the bulb out? you probably have a door jamb switch sticking on one of the doors causing the door message.spray a generous amount of wd-40 inside the door latch, open and close door(s) several times to free up stuck door switch.you can't see the door switch because it is behind the door latch, just spray wd-40 into the latch on the door until it runs out of the bottom of the door,I just did this on mine 2 days ago.now, there is a test that you can do with the odometer to see if your gas gauge is working.with the odometer showing the total miles, not the trip miles,if you can determine that with the messages you are getting.sitting in drivers seat, push and hold the trip button in and hold it in,turn key to on,not cranking, the test should begin in a couple seconds, let go of the trip button when test starts.the first thing the test does is a gauge sweep.all the gauges will sweep to the right and then return to where they were originally. this will determine if your gas gauge is working ,if it does sweep, then you will know it's the sender in the fuel tank that is bad.
