Drive through about 3 feet of mud, you will find out real fast. If you get stuck, then it's 2WD!! Alright, lets start off by defining the difference between AWD and 4WD. As a rule of thumb, AWD will always be engaged with no way of turning it off. 4WD will have either a shifter or a push button in the vehicle. If you have a button in the vehicle that allows you to select 2H, 4H and 4L, then you have a 4WD Explorer. If you have no controls allowing you to select 2H, 4H, or 4L, then you do not have 4WD, but you may have AWD. The quickest way to determine this will be to look under the vehicle. It may be a little confusing trying to figure out what you are looking at. But you should see the transmission and a drive shaft going to the rear axle. If you also see another component that the drive shafts goes into or comes out of, and has a second drive shaft going to the front of the vehicle, and you don't have the selector options inside, then its AWD. However, the easiest for you will probably be to use a VIN decoder. You enter your VIN and it will tell you the details of that VIN number.AWD only comes with the 5.0LVIN P engine, but it is an option on the 2WD and 4WD also.go to kbb.com to do a vin check,it's free.
