1994 Ford Explorer XLT Possible cause of white smoke and cranking noise?

1994 Ford Explorer XLT 175,XXX Mi. *Bad Transmission Leak (around 1/2 a quart daily) After cold start, turning onto road,white smoke pours out of tailpipe accompanied by a cranking noise from engine compartment. It can continue for a few more turns (only happens when turning vehicle , usually to the left) This began about a week ago after an automatic car wash. I don't know for certain but it seems to happen more often after adding transmission fluid and always in the morning. The transmission leak doesnt seem to drip to the ground as I never see anything underneath the vehicle. I'm wondering if the leak is being released into the engine somehow. I'm adding at least half a quart a day of transmission fluid. Someone looked up under the truck and said a line was leaking from the transmission. *edit* The oil in the truck had been overfilled by a couple quarts by last oil change shop. It has since been drained and filled correctly. Problem continues. coolant/oil level is stable

keeping engine on seems to keep the burning from being too bad
