Vehicles battery lite came on all gages shut down but vehicle still was running is it the battery or the alternator

alternator has failed,no output,running directly off of the battery,until it is drained,then it will stall and strand you.or the drive belt has broken? if the belt is still around all pulleys,then do you have a volt meter?
