Why is my instruments pegging out when I start it?

It is just a system check

some years do this as a check.But some don't.i have a 2000 F150 that does not do this,BUT one day all of a sudden it started doing that!ended up the battery was weak.changed the battery and back to normal,no gauge sweep!cluster has to see a certain voltage or it won't work correctly
