Hello, The Ford Edge is overwhelmingly one of the top vehicles for issues with brakes. I know that is not what you would like to hear, but you should first look into recalls pertaining to your model and year. This can be the antilock brake system, but also the parking brake may not be releasing. Either one could cause the calipers to drag the pads on the rotors, and the alternative is that both calipers happened to fail simultaneously.
Need a little more information here before answering: 'Approximately' how many miles are on this current set of brake pads? .. How many miles on vehicle? .. You stated "looked ok on inspection" .. Were both rear wheels removed for this *brake pad* inspection?

Strongly suspect culprit to be absence of normal 'preventive' maintenance! .. The reason "BOTH" calipers are "stuck out" is simply because the brake pads and disc rotors are completely worn out .. This is not unusual at all... It is mearly commonplace neglect of proper vehicle maintenance!
