Why does my car stop accelerating while in motion and the engine still running

Sounds like possible a transmission problem. I would check my transmission and coolant (coolant cools both engine and transmission) level and condition right away (should routinely check all fluid levels). Also Should scan for the DTCs set when your check engine light came on. Also should make sure that the engine and transmission have the most current calibrations and check for any TSBs or recalls.
