So the smoke was from just in front of battery near silonoid (?) 3 post, insulated circular switch, that is mounted on the front wall of the van forward of the batterey. There are two other things mounted near that which are a flat square 2.5inx 2.5inx3/4in, and the other is a 1 5 inbox shaped item... the smoke came from that area... Also not sure where the fuse box is located.

Just don't see how that can happen! get a volt meter and test every fuse that you can find on the van..you'll probably have to pull each fuse out to test them, cause i doubt those fuses have test points on them, being it's an 89 model! you burnt the external voltage regulator up and probably the starter wall mounted solenoid, maybe the alternator, fuses and don't have a clue what else burnt up! I'm going to talk to my friend(Hillary)in a few months,so she can pass this on down to all State DMV offices and have this put on ALL DRIVERS LICENSE EXAMS TESTS(and must get this one correct, before driving license are issued),how to install and connect the correct battery cables to the correct battery terminals on a vehicle battery!
Consider yourself lucky: https://youtu.be/PlKBqTOfQEk At least that didn't happen!
