I have a 96 Eddie Bauer Bronco that's drinking gas.

What is your question?

I bought this truck wrecked and it had set up a couple of years. It runs really good on the highway but it's idling really fast (1100 to 1600 rpm) and it floods really bad once you turn it off. I have t hold the pedal to the floor to restart it and then it sputters for a while until it levels out again, I'm probably getting about 6 mpg right now. One friend thinks its the throttle position sensor and another thinks its the fuel pressure regulator. The local part stores in my area only have adapters to test the codes for Fords going back to 1997 and I can't afford to take it to the Ford dealer. My plan is to start replacing parts I can buy online one at a time until I find the right one. Mass air flow sensor and idle air control sensor are other other possibilities but are further down my list. Any advice would be appreciated.

Remove vacuum hose from fuel pressure regulator and look for any sign of gas in hose.. If present , replace regulator!.. Check engine light on? 1996 is supposed to be OBD II compliant!.. It should not be a problem to get codes read with a simple code reader! However a full scan test sure would be a heck of a lot better!!

Thanks for the advice. The problem is that neither O'reilly nor Autozone has the right connection adapter for their tester to hook up to my truck. It's just slightly different and has the single vertical pin configured with the the 6 horizontal pins rather than in a separate little box.

2 questions... Where is that connector located, under hood?.. What is the production date (month/year) on drivers door or door jam decal?

The connector is dangling down from under the dash about 6 to 8 inches to the right of the accelerator pedal. The production date is 10/95. I pulled the line from the fuel pressure regulator while it was running. Even thought there is a strong vacuum on the line, disconnecting it made no difference in the running. I didn't see any gas in the line though. Could a stuck injector cause these high idle and flooding symptoms?

With the engine running its not going to show any gas in the hose, vacuum it sucking it inside!!!... Test with engine off . Copy and past the following link on Google and check it out. . http://www.obdii.com/connector.html
