for a while now ive noticed a faint knocking coming from the underneath of my dodge stratus. only on idling but it becomes rapid on acceleration. what could be causing this?

The knocking noise can be from many different components. Without being able to hear it, I can only give you possibilities, such as Piston Slap, excessive clearance between piston and cylinder which usually diminishes as engine warms up, Crankshaft or Connecting Rod bearings, Tappets, etc. Stop by your local repair facility for an inspection.
