How do you eventually get it to shut off? It could be a problem with the ignition. Alex
By chance - has someone wired the radiator cooling fan to run anytime the key is on? The fan is also a generator while the blades are still turning ... IF the engine finally stops on its own after a delay .. Unplug the cooling fan and try it. A diode will take of that 'IF' indeed it happens to be the problem.
I had this happen on my mothers 1978 Accord - the only time it broke down was when I borrowed it - got to work, could not shut the ignition key off. Popped the hood, pulled the coil wire (stupidly) and shocked myself. Had to call AAA for a tow to have ignition switch replaced - could not even remove the key. Then I had 2 keys, one for the doors, and one for the new ignition switch.
