What is your question?
I had the brake pedal go to the floor with my grand kids in the truck with me. I replaced the master cylinder (NEW) and a week later I had to lock up the Emergency brake to keep my grand kids from harm by sliding through the intersection... Since then I have replace the rear rotors, rear brake pads, Front calipers and new pads and rotors turned on the front... I gravity bled the brakes and then had wife pump the brakes as well and have a spongy pedal. Feels like the pedal wants to leak down. Have to pump the brakes when I am coming to the intersection.... Any thoughts on how to fix this problem.... I even pulled the fuse for the ABS system...

Clamp or pinch closed both of the front rubber flex hoses then try pedal ... If that helps, problem is from clamp to caliper..... Do the same on rear... Test is bullet-proof!!
PLEASE take this in a 'positive and caring' way ------ Put a price on you and your grand-kids lives (and the lives of those going through the intersection), and then tow the truck to a reputable shop!!!!PLEASE!
Not taking it wrong. Since then the truck has been parked and I have not taken my grand-kids anywhere in it till the problem is solved..... I know how to work on vehicles... I've done it for many years.... I DO RESPECT your thoughts and wishes. If I don't have it solved by Wednesday, then the shop it will go to. After that happened with the grand kids in the truck I said no one rides in my truck till things are fixed.... Once again I respect your thoughts and concern.... Thank you very much for your imput
Thanks for the reply , Hope you get it ! Been watching , I think 'pushrod' will get you through!
I know this is an old thread, but what did you do to fix you’re brakes? My 2005 Dodge Durango is doing the exact same thing.
Ok man soooo what was the verdict? Did you die driving like that or what happened?? I’m being sarcastic because same crap is happening with my 99 Dodge Ram 1500 4x4 and I almost killed myself driving. Replaced all break pads, discs, rotors, master cylinder, bled brakes and $600 later and NOTHING seems to be working. HELP ME!!!!!!!!
The calipers are brand new on the front.... Are you suggesting that the hoses may be bad? The problem with the brake pedal going to the floor has happened twice.... Do I need to have engine running when I do this procedure? I seen somewhere since it is ABS system that the key must not be in the switch and the doors closed. How would this effect the brakes being spongy or pedal going to the floor? any further help will be appreciated
Try the test and post results.. Then I can tell you more.. It's a process of elimination... Keys in switch ... doors open or closed has no effect.. Engine on or off doesn't matter.
Ok, here are the results from your test..... On the front with lines pinched off the pedal was hard..... on the rear with the lines pinched the brake pedal was spongy.....
There is either air still trapped in front brakes OR a problem with front brake componet mounting... That's it!!.. Make sure front pads are free to move and not binding, same with calipers... Bleed front brakes until you're tired of it, then bleed them again! .. **There IS a problem from the clamp out to the calipers,** pads etc... NOT from the clamp back to the truck... You should be able to find the problem from this point as its been narrowed down quite a bit... Check for excessive front hub bearing play as well.
Thanks for the info.... Will it be necessary to re- bleed the back ones or just do the fronts..... I have used anti grease on the brake pad slides and everything there seems to be working.... The other day when I gravity bled them, very little fluid was coming out of the front right.... I started the left side, walked in for about 5 mins and came back out and the reservoir was just about empty...... Any further suggestions would be greatly appreciated . Thank you so much
You can clamp just one front hose and then try pedal... Then do the other side and try pedal... That will get you even closer but just for good measure.... suggest bleeding ALL 4 'after' pedal feels good ... The FRONT is where the problem is!
Well I thought that I had the brake problem solved.. Bled the brakes per your suggestion and the brakes were working good.... Took it for a short drive on the back roads and brakes were working perfectly. Started to pull into the store to get some gas and a drink at 30 miles an hour and the brake pedal went to the floor... I was in the truck by myself...... and was very careful to leave plenty of room between me and other vehicles..... Can't take it to the shop till after eye surgery is over..... Have any further clues to what is causing this.... Will take it to the shop after surgery
Out of bullets!..... Let us know the final outcome.
bluehotroddaddy, what was the verdict? My 2001 Dodge Ram 1500 is doing the exact same thing. Mechanic family member came by this morning and bled the break lines and I drove it around the block. Worked fine until I pulled into the drive way and the break peddle went half way down. He told me to drive it around and he would be back in a few days to bleed it again. I went to the store right afterwards and halfway to the store it went back to having to push all the way down. Very interested in what your shop had to say about this please.
Well, I'm still having problems.. The pedal seems to want to bleed down.... I'm stopping by to see the mechanic this coming Monday if not Tomorrow (Friday). I have to pump the brakes but there has been no problem with pedal going to floor and no brakes...... Keeps bleeding down..... The master cylinder has been replaced three times now. Someone keeps telling me that I must have the mopar brand name master cylinder, I don't think so since the master cylinder I have makes the Mopar brand..... I will let you know more... But I did notice one thing... When I have to pump the brakes I noticed there was a grab on the front left...... So I am hoping that there is still air trapped in on the right front..... I'm going to try something... I'm going to pinch off the two rears and the left front and gravity feed the right front and see what happens..... Will know more after I do that and get the brakes bled..... Right now it is impossible to lay on the driveway with all the rain we are getting here in Georgia......
Pushrod- need your help please!! Found this thread with a google search, but my truck is a ‘16 3500 4wd Cummins. I noticed you said to check for bearing play. Well, I had a wheel bearing go out on me. While I was limping it off the road, all the usual ABS & traction lights came on, but the brake pedal also got real soft- as in falls almost to the floor before it finds a hard “bottom end” so to speak. Changed the bearing hub & U joint, cleared the trouble lights, but the brake pedal issue is still there. I figured out in a gravel lot that only the back brakes are working. I’m not getting any more codes or lights, but I don’t have much in the way of brakes. Any ideas? Your input would be most graciously appreciated.
Use the brake hose clamp method - once you’ve isolated the problem area then the repair becomes MUCH easier.. Caliper mounting issue - brake pad binding can cause excessive pedal travel. Common sense observation is the key after problem area is located.. Have helper pump brakes while observing operations at problematic caliper - what’s happening.. Good luck to all !
