The engine went to knocking, pinging, and squeaking after the oil pressure needle was bouncing up and down for several days.

Knocking, pinging and squeaking is not a good sign. You should have your engine oil pressure checked with a manual pressure gauge. If all is OK, check your cooling system for signs of overheating.
