Regardless of parts store listings... Starting in 1987 for Dodge and Chrysler and 1991 for Jeep, MOST of these vehicles have externally regulated alternators .. that are controlled by the Alternator Voltage Control Module *inside* the Engine Control Unit, ECU (computer) . This is often called the ECC, ECM, EEC, or PCM. Often, especially after installing a high output alternator, the alternator voltage control module *inside* the ECU will fail , leaving you with a dead charging system where your external regulator alternator doesn't work , or doesn't work the way it should , yet your engine runs fine, however the entire ECU would need replacement. Many have had to replace the computer several times just to get the alternator working again... Copy and paste the YouTube link @ bottom of this page... Good luck!
Thanks Steve! Is it expensive to bypass the PCM Computer and install a regulator or can the computer be opened and I can change the V. Regulator . What is the location of the computer? Is it what appear to be a lean burner?
i didn't post that info, sorry.don't see any info posted? i thought on that vehicle, that it has an external mounted voltage regulator.2 wires from the back of the alternator go right to a silver regulator box...maybe i'm getting yours mixed up with something else?
