what are some symptons of a bad idle air control valve I think mine may be bad

Yes, have it checked by a "mechanic". Easily tested for any drive belt system componet problems, mechanic will/should know what to do. You are not equipped to do this!!

just had the altenator replaced and my mech. took off the iac and said he cleaned it ,
