Given that the time estimate to replace a condenser is 3.5 hours, how hard would this really be for a competent shade tree mechanic?

Does the "SHADE TREE" Mechanic have a Refrigerant recovery System and Evacuation pump? If the answer is NO, Let the repair shop where you received the estimate do the work.
I agree with Johnny Mopar. I also have to tell you we love shade tree mechanics, quick lube places with untrained lube techs, they generate a good chunk of business to us. It usually cost a lot more to repair their mistakes than the original problems. Zee
Have access to refrig recovery system , vac pump, etc. and the knowledge to use them but have already had the system evacuated when the leak was located. I really wanted a concise and informative review of the process of accessing the condenser which is absent from both comments above. By the way, shade tree means I've rebuilt and installed 20+ engines, 50+ clutch jobs, 20+ automatic and manual transmissions, rear ends, etc. and I've never needed a "professional" mechanic to fix anything. Got to love the internet.
