Anyone know what could be causing this? Could it be the compressor? Or, would the AC not work at all upon recharge if the compressor wasn't working?

After it stopped working was an Ac machine used to recover the remaining refrigerant? If it still had the proper amount a leak is not the problem, if there wasnt any left a leak is the only possibility. Make sure Schroeder valves were replaced. Other than a leak suspect the low side switch, relay, compressor, or a bunch of dead bugs stuck in your condenser.
This was done, but no leak found.
IF after recharging a/c system it works ok - then stops working after a short period - there IS a leak within the system! Leak may be in the ‘hidden’ evaporator core. Have a *professional mechanic* test for leaks. Good luck!
