Cruise control activates on highway and car shuts down

I was driving about 65 on the highway and my cruise control turned on and was stuck at 50 mph until it came to a complete stop. As this happened the brakes and steering wheel tightened up and once the car stopped it wasn't running. The check engine light has been on continuously for a week. I have a 1999 Chrysler LHS. Other issues are bad gas smell/leak

Wow - I’m finding it difficult to keep up with so many different concerns happening all at once.
Pretty sure the engine had already stalled when the brakes and steering “tightened up” - that still doesn’t address the cruise control some-how getting stuck at 50 mph while you were traveling at 65 mph.
