Need to know the reason you got a new coil, what the original problem was and any check engine codes you may have had.

the shop that replaced my valve cover gasket said it was going and my car was slow to start at times

MAYBE YOU HAVE A FUEL ISSUE. DID YOU TEST FUEL PRESSURE AND SPARK? MOST LIKELY NOT A BAD COIL.
