My auto blows nothing but cold air , but its over heating

Car was overheating and only way to stop temp gauge going up ( temp gauge ) had to turn defrost on high heat and high fan till went down, now temp needle goes high but no heat and its winter and need heat Help

What makes this problem better or worse?

Just blowing cold air
