when car is idling it revs up and down by itself. could it be an idle sensor or do these engines have an idle sensor?

Sounds like a vacuum leak. A vacuum leak will cause the idle to raise, while the Idle Air Control Motor (IAC) is trying to compensate and keep the idle to it's programmed specs, thus the fluctuation in idle speed. Inspect all f your vacuum and emissions hoses for cracks, splits etc. Replace the hoses where necessary.
