car died while driving and only spins the starter when i try to crank it help??

How many miles since last TIMING BELT & APPLICABLE TIMING COMPONENTS replacement ? Look at the engine drive belt and the belt driven components while a helper cranks the engine .. IF you see those parts rotating - then the starter IS turning the engine .. However IF the timing belt has failed - the engine has no compression - and it just 'sounds like' the starter is the only thing spinning. Good luck!
