My car jerking and cuts off when in reverse or when I stop. What could be wrong?

When I get in the car in the morning to start it, it does fine. As soon as I put it in reverse it starts to cutting off. I start it again and put it in reverse ,I'll back up a little put the car in drive ,pull off and it jerks will drive and sometimes not all the time but will cut off and I have to restart it. After it has run for a while it doesn't do it. What may be the problem?
