My transmission works briefly then stops working it's a 1998 Chevy venture

Transmission fluid pump is starving for fluid when the whining noise is present - when the noise stops the torque converter is not rotating the pump due to lack of fluid. This MAY BE the result of low fluid level - restricted fluid filter or internal fluid pump damage.. In any event - *hands-on* testing / evaluation by qualified personnel will be required .. Good luck!
