When I turn on the air cold air is good, but the compressor runs on and off.

The compressor will stay engaged as long as needed for the selected temperature - this may be normal operation. Turn temperature settings on low - select high fan speed - compressor should stay engaged for a longer period of time. IF a/c is cooling effectively - no worries.
