Starter won't engage even with a boost , could it be the alternator?

Quite possibly the starter OR, a connection(faulty) in the circuit. Unless the starter is cheap and easy to replace, a proper diagnosis would be wise. Do you have a voltmeter, and understand it's use? You may be able to check a few things yourself.
