What is your question?
I just bought this vehicle from my brother in law. The transaction took place over the phone. I knew originally it needed an idler arm and he said a vacuum pump, which he found out later the auto part store was calling it a smog pump. This was ok by me. upon bringing the vehicle to my house he lives 2 hours away, I find out the Brake light is on, the service engine light is on and ABS light is on. I asked him about service engine light? he tells me the light is on because of the vacuum pump/smog pump. I asked why is the brake light on? he said the ABS needs some repair. I said I was never told about any ABS being bad or needing repaired. I have no clue how much it will cost to take care of the ABS & Brake issue on this vehicle? I feel bad because he drove it 2 hours to me and we had already agreed to do this sale and buy transaction however was not aware or told ahead of time about any brake issues either. If this is going to be really costly than I am not sure I want to follow thru with this transaction. Please if you have any idea how much the ABS/Brake issue might cost that would be so very helpful to me. I am CLUELESS on this. Thank you in advance. Ms. Long

Diagnosis is the only way to find out the actual cost to repair any problems.Do you trust this 'brother-in-law enough to believe he has not had it checked out elsewhere and decided it wasn't worth it? OR maybe he does have some papers with diagnosis descriptions , that may give more info as to what may be needed.
Thank you for your reply, I really appreciate it. I don't think he has had it diagnosed. He has owned this vehicle for 7 years. He just took a new job with the travel time being 2 hours 1 way so he needed a more efficient vehicle for his work travels. He bought a hybrid prius. If the ABS was needing something done or repaired would this cause the Brake light to ALSO stay on at all times too? or is this probrably a separate issue that the Brake light is staying on also? I didn't hear any squeeling while I test drove it and the brakes seem to work fine they are not going down to floor board or anything like that. Just to be sure I also later went out and checked and made sure the park brake was fully disengaged and it was so it isn't that the park brake is not fully disengaged. Just wondering if ABS needing something would cause the BRAKE light to stay on at all times too? I don't know but am thinking this to be a separate issue? Thank you so very much. If you know or have an opinion I would like to hear it. Thanks again. Ms. Long
I missed the bit about the 'red' brake light being on the first time , sorry. That light being on will automatically (in most cases I'm aware of) by default , turn on the ABS light. The red light indicates a problem in the hydraulic part of the braking system , generally. It could also come on if the fluid level is low or the sensor that monitors it is faulty , among several other reasons. In other words , it might not be as bad as we could picture (that is a relative term!). Find and have the cause of the 'red' brake light and that might take care of the ABS. Hope it's simple! (again, another 'relative' term).
I want to thank you so very much for listening and taking the time to try and help me figure this out. On another note I would at least like to keep you informed of the situation once I have it fixed so you'll at least know the end result of this situation. I am very grateful to you and once again thank you very much.
Thank you for the reply. Please do let us know what the brake issue is/was. After that's fixed , then start a new post for the check engine light/code(s) and we'll see how we can help there. Good luck!
Responding back with the original ABS light,Brake light & Check Engine light question I had asked for my Chevy S10 pick-up truck. I had this looked at now and repaired by a professional mechanic at a shop. It turns out the issue with this was not a brake problem, meaning in needing brakes that is. What was wrong was BOTH Left & Right Sensors needed replaced.Once both Left & Right Sensors were replaced BOTH check Engine light went off and the Brake light went off. However my ABS light comes and goes. The mechanic checked this out with the machine they use for this (3) three times and NOTHING is coming up wrong with it on this machine. Sorry I don't know the name of the machine unless it's a Diagnostic testing machine. The mechanic even called a buddy of his and told him what was going on with the ABS light and asked did he have any knowledge or any ideas of what else to do? His buddy told him to disconnect it and redo it again. Disconnect what I don't know I'm just relaying what the mechanic told me. So he said he disconnected it, retested it and nothing shows up being wrong with it. So the ABS light comes on and sometimes goes off. I have no clue as to why this is happening nor does the mechanic. The Sensors cost $59.00 each Labor for 1.5 that's 1 and 1/2 hours was $65.00 I want to say thank you for all your responses when I first wrote in. I wanted to make sure to post the update to what my problem was so if anyone else might be experiencing the same problem this may also be what's wrong with their truck. Ms. Long
