What is your question?
Car won't shift unless the engine is turned off.
What makes this problem better or worse?
Worse when you continue to move the car by switching to 1st gear while the car is in neutral and off because when you turn it back on it wears the battery out
How long has your 1999 Chevrolet S10 had this problem?
two days

Unfortunately - the slave cylinder is 'inside' the bell housing - behind the release bearing.
So yes - transmission removal is required. However - there is a chance it’s just gummed up ! Ask me how I know this ..... Only IF you want to know of course. I’ll probably be offline awhile. Good luck to ya!
pushrod, I'd love to know if it's just gummed up because it was replaced 16,000 miles ago. And if it's "gummed up" how can I "ungum" it.
Since it has been replaced already: Check fluid condition in the master cylinder - should be ‘clear’ - if it is not - flush with new brake fluid while bleeding system .. Do this ‘several’ times. I have even used carb cleaner then flush with brake fluid - however that is only in extreme cases and is not recommended for the DIYer. Keep in mind > Without *hands-on* evaluation - we can’t be sure this is actually a hydraulic system problem or a mechanical clutch component failure.
So sorry, I goofed and was thinking master cylinder. Yes trans needs to come out.
Ask Alex, No problem, they used to put it on the outside, in the front, I think.
Ask Alex, Where is it then?
