What is your question?
I just bought an 04 Chevy Malibu, drove it for about half an hour & it was fine! Then, I stopped to turn left onto my mother's street, & the steering wheel started rapidly turning left & right all on it's own. Even after I parked & turned the engine off, the wheel was continuously turning itself left & right, power was still on. When I turned it completely off & back on again, NOTHING! Was fine again. I have no clue where to even begin to look for what is causing this issue so I can fix it! Showed it to my mom & we turned it off & on a few times, & still nothing. She put a code reader on it, & it did not throw any codes. I can hear a noise, that sounds like a thud coming from, maybe the right front tire side of the car? Also, cruise control doesn't work, & the front turn signal lights are blown. I have read a few recalls that say these have had steering issues, as well as the cruise control not working and lights blowing & melting! PLEASE HELP!
What makes this problem better or worse?
This was only time for me.. I just bought it used!
How long has your 2004 Chevrolet Malibu had this problem?

You do have electric power steering with this vehicle, which means steering assist and control as provided via a Power Steering Control Module (PSCM) utilizing a power steering motor, a steering wheel position sensor, a steering shaft torque sensor and related components. As such, you'll need to have professional testing performed by someone that has a suitable diagnostic tool able to interface with the control module and determine what is happening while you are experiencing your symptom. I would expect that there is some kind of concern with sensor / wiring that is causing the control module to control the steering in the direction you are saying it is turning. But there are multiple strategies going on here to prevent safety related issues - so you'll have to perform proper needed testing. It must be done by someone with technical resources (manuals / wiring diagrams) and an actual diagnostic tool - not some kind of "code reader" -- that will not do you any good. Good luck.
Did you ever figure it out? Mine does the same thing. But not consistently enough for someone to witness it. Some say steering column assembly? What was the fix? Thank you!
