well, what you have been told is mostly correct.for that year, they had 2 different styles of the crank sensor.one with a lead wire, which bolts on with 2 bolts, and one without a lead wire, which bolts on with one bolt.the one with the lead wire is mounted behind the balancer.the one without the lead wire is in the block above the oil filter. google these part numbers, and you will see what each one looks like.SU195 and SU137.if you have the one with 1 bolt, remove the connector, then the bolt, and twist it back and forth to pull it out.it has an oring on it that may stick.lubricate the oring on the new one with a little amount of engine oil before installing it.
they sold me the one with one bolt. problem is I laid under my car staring up at oil filter and all around it and cant see where it is. and I don't know what the balancer is but I don't have any special tools if its anywhere that's requires a bunch of stuff to be removed. mostly I was told above oil filter but I must be blind cuz I cant see it...lol....I tried to find pictues of where its at on line but no luck. I get stuff on every chevy but one I want. I appreciate any and all your help
i just found this,it has (2) crank sensors.read this, hope it helps! 1998 CHEVY MALIBU 3.1L. I NEED TO KNOW WHERE I CAN FIND THE CRANK SENSOR. AND HOW TO REPLACE IT. CAN YOU HELP. THE CAR MAINLY WON'T START THE FIRST TIME OF THE DAY. That engine has 2 crank position sensors. One is near the starter and bolts to the engine block. The other is behind the crank pulley/balancer.
