Car has 318,000 miles on engine but otherwise in really great shape. Have been quoted a little over $5,500 which seems high to me.

Maybe a little high but if labor is already included, it is not ridiculous. Call around and look for a $4500 price with labor included. Here is replacement engine costs: http://www.autozone.com/autozone/parts/2000-Chevrolet-Impala/Engine/_/N-jdz5uZ9enw6?filterByKeyWord=engine&fromString=search
WHERE IS THE MOTOR FROM? IS IT A DEALER MOTOR? APPROX 5000.00 IS A FAIR PRICE
I'm pretty sure it's a GM remanufactured and I have found out that is a good price from them and I have discovered that it is a long block...which is what I want. I'm checking with a Jasper Reman Engine repair shop to see what they will charge.
It may be cheaper to get the one you have rebuilt. Google a good Mobile Mechanic, and ask for a quote from them. Chances are to get it rebuilt might be cheaper than a remanufactured one, remanufactured means the engine is already rebuilt. You can get it done for less than 5,000$
Thank you for taking the time to help me out. I had no idea what I was doing or what a fair price was. Thanks again.
