What is your question?
I ran out of gas on the side of the road. I put more gas in it, so it had a third of a tank. Gave it a boost, and it would turn over and sputter out. The mechanic says it will turn over and stay on when it's manually pumped, but another mechanic said that it's air in the lines. What do I do?
What makes this problem better or worse?
It's worse when it's not boosted
How long has your 1996 Chevrolet Cavalier had this problem?

***See other answer for the fuel pump testing 1st*** This is a common problem with your car,and the first thing to do is don't run it that low on fuel.when it gets to 1/4 tank, consider that as EMPTY and re-fuel it! The fuel pump MUST stay submerged in fuel to keep the pump running/lubricated cool! Problem Description The fuel pump may fail causing the engine to stall and not restart. (43 people reported this problem) 9 model years affected: 1990, 1991, 1996, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005 One of several Reported >>2003 Chevrolet Cavalier Visitor My car completely shut off and steering wheel locked up while going 70 mph on the freeway. Thankfully not too many cars on the road at the time and was able to force the wheel to the right and park the car on the shoulder. Had to have it towed to a shop where the had to replace the fuel pump. Not cheap and i lost a full tank of gas on top of it! Can't believe there hasn't been a recall on this. I've seen a lot of similar complaints...
It is quite possible the the engine stalled because of the same reason it will not start and run now .... Which will require *hands-on* testing to determine what that reason is. It COULD be due to a failed fuel pump .. Fuel pressure test is a good way to start the diagnosis. Good luck with it!
