my 1979 Chevy Caprice won't drive but it will reverse.why

Severe internal transmission damage can occur in short order when vehicle is spinning while being stuck! .. Transmission overheating, shifting between drive and reverse is most likely the cause of your problem .. Check transmission fluid (from dipstick) for burnt smell and darkened color..... Good luck!
