Have a 87 Caprice that runs fine but sometimes dies when I hit the gas

Just got a car when I drive it it runs fine but sometimes it will die when I go to takeoff. Then when it does iI have to try starting back up and not hit the gas. If I do it dies atomatically help I'm a female with no clue

Is it a v-6 or an 8 cyl?HINT-4.3L would be the V6. That one is throttle body injected and would be a little different from the carb. models of which the other answer is correct for...V6 is Rare , but just in case.......

The accelerator pump is bad, no working. its delivers the extra gas the motor needs until the main jets can catch up.
