engine stalls when I put it in drive or reverse.

Sounds like the distributer needs to be replaced. Chased one for quite awhile once and found the distributer was the issue, same symptoms, idles fine until you put it in gear, and mostly dies even when trying to give it gas to keep it running.

Also try tapping on the egr valve with a small hammer, possibly stuck open...... fairly common on this engine!
