Yes .. Hydraboost brake system uses power steering pump pressure instead of engine vacuum for power brake assist... It is imperative to keep power steering system in proper working order as well as brake system.

Thanks. Local shop said speed sensor probably would be the cause of my problems.

That's possible .. Easily tested with proper scan tool and viewing live 'wheel speed sensor data' with test drive.
