Battery light and not charging msg come on in my caddillac but starts up fine

Only for a very short distance - 'maybe' to local auto repair facility .. The engine is likely receiving operating voltage from the battery only - battery WILL eventually become discharged to the point of engine stall .. That can create a dangerous situation while driving. IF you choose to drive this vehicle - do not use any accessories which will further tax the batteries power!
